Business License
If you are opening or operating a business in the city limits, you are required to add a City of Gig Harbor endorsement to your Washington state business license. Business is defined as any activities, occupation, pursuits, or professions with the object of gain, benefit, or advantage to the licensee or to another person or class, directly or indirectly, whether part-time or full-time. To add the endorsement, please visit the Washington State Department of Revenue's Gig Harbor Business License Page.
Businesses can also find helpful information on the state's Small Business Guidance webpage.
Are you starting a new business, planning a Tenant Improvement or a Change of Use in an existing space?
The City of Gig Harbor is pleased to offer Business Assistance Meetings (BAM) as a service to new and existing business owners wanting to make tenant improvements* or initiate a change of use** at a location within the city limits.
A business owner or their representative may request a free 30-minute meeting with city staff from any or all divisions to discuss a proposal to either open a new business, enhance an existing business, or move an existing business to another location.
All businesses must adhere to zoning and building regulations. Parcel zoning can be found on the city's Atlas or by contacting the Planning Division. Find out if the business is an allowed use and what parking requirements apply using the Land Use Matrix.
A new Certificate of Occupancy (CO) is required for a change of occupancy where code requires a greater degree of safety, accessibility, structural strength, fire protection, means of egress, ventilation or sanitation than is existing in the current building or structure:
1. Any change in the occupancy classification of a building or structure.
2. Any change in the purpose of, or a change in the level of activity within, a building or structure.
If making any changes or alterations, please contact Community Development to see if permits are required.
