Goal, purpose, and scope
The purpose of the mayor's youth council is to engage the city’s youth in local government, community building, and inclusive civic dialogue. The youth council will serve as a platform for young residents to share their unique perspectives, contribute to the cultural richness of our city, and participate in shaping an inclusive and vibrant future for all. It will offer a structured way for youth to engage in public service, leadership development, and community partnerships, while providing city leaders with valuable insight into the experiences and needs of younger constituents. By empowering youth to participate in decision-making processes and community initiatives, the mayor’s youth council will further the city’s efforts to foster unity, encourage inclusive community engagement, and cultivate the next generation of thoughtful, compassionate civic leaders in Gig Harbor.
The youth council will have the opportunity to:
- learn more about local government.
- be a leader in the community.
- provide their perspective to city officials.
- earn a minimum of 15 volunteer hours.
- include experience on college applications.
- receive letters of recommendation, potentially.
Member eligibility
- Must be in grades 9 through 12 at time of appointment.
- Must be enrolled in a Peninsula School District school or reside in Gig Harbor.
Meetings and activities
The council will consist of 15 members. Meetings will be held monthly and provide periodic reports to the city council and administrative staff.
