What is Source Control? Source Control is preventing pollution at the source. Source control practices help prevent pollutants (trash, sediment, grease, oil, paint, detergent, etc.) from contacting stormwater and entering the stormwater drainage system, where it flows downstream directly into streams, lakes, groundwater, and Puget Sound without treatment.

What is a Source Control Inspection? The City of Gig Harbor is required by the State to inspect businesses and public sites throughout Gig Harbor to ensure these sites are taking the necessary steps to keep stormwater clean. These steps are technically referred to as best management practices, or BMPs. BMPs prevent pollutants from contacting stormwater and may include protective practices and/or physical structures.

Click on resources below, arranged by business type, to help you understand how to implement source control on your site. For a full explanation of the required BMPs, see Volume IV - Source Control in the City Stormwater Manual.
